ASUS Eee PC Windows 7 Upgrade Details

ASUS has announced details regarding which systems are eligble for the free Windows 7 upgrade. Well, free as in you only have to pay for shipping. The good news is that if you have purchased a qualifying Eee PC between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010, you can register with ASUS to get your new copy of Windows 7. The bad news is that your Eee PC probably doesn’t qualify and you will have to spend $50 at Amazon to get your Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. In order to qualify, your Eee PC must have shipped with Windows Vista or XP Professional (which is only offered in Japan on an Eee PC). The Eee’s that do qualify are:

EeePC 1101HA with Vista Home Premium (Japan Only)
EeePC 1005HA with XP Pro/Vista Business (Japan Only)

Laptop Mag Reviews the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA

Laptop Magazine has published their review of the 10-inch ASUS Eee PC 1005HA Seashell Netbook:

Pros

Nearly 9 hours of runtime

Attractive chassis

Compelling software

Spacious keyboard

Cons

Lid smudges quickly

Somewhat thick for a netbook

Fan can get loud

An attractive design, comfortable keyboard with appropriately placed keys, and almost nine hours of runtime make the ASUS’ Eee PC 1005HA the most well rounded Eee PC to date. And at $389, it’s also one of the most affordable netbooks with its feature set. Those lusting after a thinner netbook will be better suited by the Eee PC 1008HA, but will have to pay $40 more and expect three hours’ less battery life. Though we still prefer the $399 Toshiba mini NB205’s more premium build and island–style keyboard, the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA is a very close second.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA 10-inch Seashell Netbook

The 10-inch Eee PC 1005HA is ASUS’ latest netbook to continue the “Seashell” design philosophy. This model will be available in multiple configurations at a lower price point than the 1008HA. The 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 WSVGA LED backlit display also incorporates a 1.3-megapixel webcam. The 1005HA will be available with either an Intel Atom N280 or N270 Processor with 1GB of DDR2 RAM.

The 1005HA carries over the same outstanding keyboard of the 1008HA. All buttons are properly configured and well spaced.

Coming in at a thicker than the 1008HA at 25.9 to 36.5 mm, the 1005HA is able to offer ports that are not hidden behind doors. With the additional thickness, ASUS is also offering three removable Lithium-Ion battery options:

3-Cell / 23Wh / 4 hours
6-Cell / 48Wh / 8.5 hours
6-Cell / 63Wh / 10.5 hours

Bit-Tech has published their review of the ASUS Eee PC 1008HA ‘Seashell’ Netbook:

The Eee PC 1008HA is a breath of fresh air in a market that has lacked a bit of spice recently. While there are a few design flaws, many are forgivable. The 1008HA looks stunning and it’s sure to turn a few heads when you pull it out of your laptop bag on the train. It’s also incredibly satisfying to use – both the keyboard and trackpad are excellent and a cut above most other netbooks we’ve tested. The keyboard is at last on a par with the Samsung NC10’s when it comes to quality.

Some of the flaws, though, aren’t quite as forgivable. While battery life was surprisingly good considering the battery is a puny three cell rated to only 2,900mAh, the fact that it’s non-removable and there’s no clear policy on replacements is a concern – when the battery has decided to give up the ghost after a few years of service, your sleek and stylish 1008HA will be confined to door wedge duties.

Technology pundit Andy Ihnatko has published his review of the ASUS 1008HA Seashell 10-inch Netbook:

When I first saw the 1008HA ($429, eeepc.asus.com), I knew that things had changed. The third generation of netbook has arrived.

If you are still not sure if the review is going well, he continues:

The Seashell is a common netbook wrapped in a wholly uncommon and wonderful design. A few years ago, this design could have been sold by Sony as an $1800 ultraportable and nobody would have batted an eye.

And lest you accuse me of being a velvet-suited, lily-sniffing aesthete, the Seashell’s slim lines are actually a feature. Portable computers want to be taken places and used. Its comfortable screen and large keyboard present no barrier to doing a full day’s work on the thing, and its size and shape provokes you to take it with you wherever you go.

I’m not suggesting that the Seashell sets a mark for netbooks that will never be surpassed. But it clearly marks the start of a third generation…a new wave of style and convenience that strikes the phrase “Yeah, I know; but what do you want for $400?” from the discussion.

The ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA 10-inch Netbook

ASUS Computer has taken your typical netbook image and raised it to 11. The Eee PC 1008HA 10-inch netbook is ASUS’ first Seashell design. Taking design queues from much more expensive ultra-portables, like the Apple MacBook Air, ASUS has produced a very elegant netbook.

With a height that tapers to an inch (18-to-25.7mm), the 1008HA is very thin for a netbook. Meanwhile, weighing in at just 2.42 pounds means that you will hardly notice it’s around. Incorporating a non-removable 2900 mAH lithium polymer battery, instead of Lithium Ion, ASUS claims a 6 hour run time. I’m not exactly sure how you would stretch it’s Intel Atom N280 that long, but we shall see.

The Keyboard layout of the Eee PC 1008HA netbook is outstanding. No longer does a Netbook Dad need to fight the infuriating battle of the 1005H’s Right Shift-vs-Page Up. All keys look well spaced and the placement is very functional.

ASUS has incorporated a 10-inch LCD screen with LED-backlighting in the 1008HA. The resolution is a netbook standard 1024 x 600 pixels and it does have a glossy coating. The top of the bezel also integrates a 1.3-megapixel camera.

Other notable bits include 802.11b/g/n as well as Bluetooth2.1 + EDR. All of the Two USB ports, 1 Ethernet, and dual audio jacks are hidden behind rubber doors on either side of the chassis. The single Mini VGA connector is cleverly hidden in it’s own bay underneath. All of this to make sure that you have clean sides.

You really don’t expect a 10-inch netbook to combine this level of style while still remaining usable. For this ASUS should be commended for raising the Eee PC 1008HA to height not yet seen.

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Review at Laptop Mag

Laptop Magazine has published their review of the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Netbook:

With the Eee PC 1000HE, ASUS offers one of the best values in netbooks around. This system features a vastly improved keyboard, and its trackpad and touch buttons are better than most systems in its class. Although the processor doesn’t add much in the way of performance, we’ll take it. More important, the 1000HE lasts more than 7 hours on a charge.

In the field of 10-inch netbooks, the $399 Eee PC 1000HE offers the best combination of value, performance, and endurance on the market today. For those with a bit more cash to spend, we prefer the lighter designs and better keyboards of the more expensive Samsung NC10 and HP Mini 2140. Those who care more about price than battery life may be attracted to the $349 10-inch Acer Aspire One, which also weighs less than the 1000HE, but lasts nearly 3 hours less than the Asus. The bottom line is that consumers who want the most bang for the buck will find the 1000HE an ideal choice.
